FROM UNCW Press Release:
October 28, 2016
When Dequan Mitchell ’17 first arrived at UNCW, he did not enjoy Wilmington or the opportunities UNCW had to offer. Coming from the larger city of Charlotte, Mitchell found Wilmington frustratingly small. It was not until the end of his freshman year that he tried to truly engage with his local and university community. He began to explore the city of Wilmington and the natural beauty of the surrounding area.
His engagement paid off in spades. Now, Mitchell heads into his final year at UNCW with distinction as President of the Black Student Union and as a returning peer mentor for the Excellence Project within the Upperman African American Cultural Center.
When he’s not relaxing by playing basketball-related video games or enjoying the beach at night, Mitchell is working tirelessly to make his mark upon UNCW’s campus. Created to support excellence in academic achievement among African American UNCW students, the Excellence Project provides Mitchell with the opportunity to do something he desires strongly: to establish a strong, prestigious presence on campus for the Upperman African American Cultural Center.
“Our mentees achieved the highest GPA for peer mentor programs at UNCW,” Mitchell said. “This gives me the honor to return as a mentor in 2016-17.”
For his own professional future as a student in the Cameron School of Business, Mitchell is spearheading his own business and working to develop several app ideas that focus on community interaction. He hopes to create these apps for both the business and church communities. Mitchell is slated to graduate from UNCW in May 2017 with a B.A. in business development and entrepreneurship.
“I wish the public understood how incredible the programs are at UNCW and how many leadership opportunities are available here,” said Mitchell. “After acquiring a determined and optimistic spirit, I have grown in all areas of life since my freshman year. I was able to understand the deeper meaning of the events and programs created for our benefit.”
